Walk Your Talk

A humorous greeting card showed a grotesquely thin cow wandering in a barren desert. The skinny cow was meant to illustrate "where nonfat milk comes from." The logic of the cartoon, of course, is entirely unscientific. Nonfat milk is not produced by nonfat cows!

Everyone Needs Jesus

Cambridge University professor J. S. Whale received a letter from a man who wrote that he and his wife were in their mid-sixties and saw no need for Jesus. They had never visited a church, had no belief in God or a future life, and yet had been happily married for 40 years. They were highly respected, and they did their best to make this world a better place to live in. So the writer wondered what religion could possibly offer them.

Stay Protected

My married daughter called from her home in another state to report some "bad news." She had two cavities in her previously flawless teeth.

The Trail

High in the mountains near our home is a trail that threads its way, rising and falling down the side of a steep canyon. It leads to a stream that passes first through a castle-like heap of boulders, then flows gently through deep, mossy woods. It's a peaceful, quiet area where wild flowers bloom in fragile beauty—a secluded, seldom-visited place.

Convicted By My Own Words

I poured my heart into worship ministries at church because I love helping people to connect Sunday worship with personal, daily worship. I served on committees and as a chaplain for choir and orchestra; I wrote weekly prayers for the worship folder and daily prayer prompters for each day's Bible reading; I worked with our worship pastor to plan services. Then he resigned.

'I Will'

An evangelist was trying to help a woman understand John 1:12, and what it means to receive Christ. "Your last name is Franklin, isn't it?" he asked. "Yes," she said. "How long has it been that?" "Ever since my husband and I were married 30 years ago." "Tell me," he said, "how did you become Mrs. Franklin?"

It's So Unfair!

We seem to use some things more than others—our mouths more than our ears, our stomachs more than our minds. We also seem to use the phrase "It's so unfair!" so much more often than "I'm so undeserving."

Overcome Evil With Good

As Jesus began to make His way to Jerusalem, He sent messengers ahead to prepare a Samaritan village along the way for His arrival. But the people there rejected Him.

We Are Family

Teammates of the late Willie Stargell called him "Pops" because of his leadership both on and off the baseball field. In 1979, when Stargell led the Pittsburgh Pirates to their second World Series title, the team was nicknamed "The Family" because of their close relationship.
